HOW DID THE BROOKHAVEN CHAPTER OF LINKS PLAYERS START?
From: Bill Rogers
In late Spring 2015, I received a call from Randy Wolff inviting me to lunch. I had met Randy at Crown Colony C.C. in Lufkin playing in the Temple Cup. We met for lunch and Randy got right to the purpose of our visit. He explained that he was the Regional Director for an organization called Links Players.
Links Player is an organization that has many chapters in country clubs throughout the U.S. and even some internationally. There are 5-6 chapters in the Metroplex. Their common denominator is Faith and Golf. It is a nondenominational organization.
There was not a chapter at Brookhaven CC and Randy wanted me to start one. I resisted because I didn’t think I was qualified to do something like this. After some persuading on Randy’s part, I agreed to think about it and pray about it. A few days later I ran into Bob Dickey on the practice tee and told him of my visit with Randy Wolff. Bob immediately told me he had been looking for something like this but had not found the right vehicle to pursue it further. After more discussion we agreed to try it. At Bob’s suggestion we contacted John Pierce. John jumped on board immediately. John told us he and Randy had been classmates at LSU many years ago. Small world!!!
I called Randy and told him of my discussion with Bob and John and that we wanted to give Links Players a try. We decided to have our first meeting the Friday after Labor Day. Just the 3 of us in Frank’s Place around the poker table. A couple of weeks later Don Thrailkill joined us and things took off from there.
That was almost 5 years ago with men seeking to learn more about God, Jesus, and the Bible. Our growth has been by word of mouth, Don’s commercials to Brookhaven Seniors and Super Seniors and other members of our Bible Study inviting people to join us on Friday mornings at 8:00. Now we have 15-20 men attending every Friday and an email list of about 51 men. We have been blessed. People are hungry for the word of our Lord and Savior.
We welcome everyone interested in hearing of God’s word and would appreciate any suggestions to help improve our group and study. God has blessed us by answering many of our prayers on our weekly prayer list.
AMEN!
